Environmental Indicator - 2023 Forest Park Solo Exhibition - Gallery of Contemporary Art
Environmental Indicator features porcelain and white stoneware sculptures of species endemic to the Midwest and species which are invasive and damaging to the ecosystem. Amphibians serve as environmental indicators and are used to monitor the ecosystem’s health; slag glass and metal represents mining, which has a very serious impact on our waterways. These aspects invite the viewers to reflect on the complexities of nature and are reminiscent of how deeply entwined we are with our environment. The glazes used are made to look both organic and evocative of the absence of life; a variety of surfaces are utilized to highlight the handbuilt and wheel-thrown biomorphic shapes. The use of porcelain clay is also significant; historically, this clay was once as highly revered as gold. Sculptures resting on fossils speak to the idea that species such as the Ozark Hellbender are considered living fossils, as they have changed very little over time. By abstracting the surfaces and attempting to push the clay to its limits, the topic of fragility is discussed in this work as well. Some believe that amphibians are detrimental or dangerous; instead, this work invites the viewer to look past their notions and recognize the value of a toad.
